With Engineering as the main subject, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology is a key applied research university that boasts its coordinated development in multiple disciplines such as Engineering, Science, Economics, Management, Literature, Law and Art, which, meanwhile, is also a pilot unit for the construction of high-level local universities in Shanghai. Adhering to the motto of “Faithfulness, Diligence, Love, Thinking, Learning and Ambition” and the goal of cultivating “Engineering, Innovation and Internationalization”-oriented high-quality talents, the school enjoys the reputation of “Whampoa Military Academy for Manufacturing Industry” in China. In 2017, the School of Marxism was established on the basis of the former School of Social Sciences and approved as a Model School of Marxism in Shanghai universities. In 2018, it was granted a first-level master’s program of Marxist theory on the basis of the original two second-level master’s programs of Basic Principles of Marxism and Ideological and Political Education.

At present, there are 64 teachers in the school, including 13 professors (including part-time professors) and 17 associate professors, many of whom have been selected into the high-level talent programs like the Influential Nominees of Ideological and Political Teachers in National Colleges and Universities, Shanghai Leading Talents, Shanghai Top Young and Middle-aged Talents in Marxist Theory Teaching and Research, Shanghai New Talents in Social Sciences, Shanghai Dawn Scholars, Shanghai “Morning Star” Scholars and Shanghai Sunshine Scholars. Lots of teachers have won awards in the National College Ideological and Political Theory Teaching Demonstration, Shanghai Ideological and Political Teaching Competition and the Ideological and Political Teaching Competition in the Yangtze River Delta, and been bestowed the honorary titles of Bao Steel Excellent Teacher, National College Ideological and Political Theory Teaching Backbone, Shanghai Famous Teacher of College Ideological and Political Theory Course and Shanghai Most Beautiful Ideological and Political Course Teacher. Among them, some have also won the First Prize of Shanghai Young Teacher Teaching Competition and Shanghai Yucai Award, etc.

Six teaching and research departments have been set up in the school as the organizational framework of ideological and political teaching and research, which are Basic Principles of Marxism, Localization of Marxism in China, Ideology & Morality and Rule of Law, Outline of Modern and Contemporary History of China, Situation and Policy, and Practice Teaching, respectively. Six research institutions have been established to provide academic support for the discipline construction of Marxist theory, including the Research Center for the Localization of Marxism in China and Shanghai Development in the New Era, the Comparative Research Center for Western Marxism and Chinese Marxism, the Research Institute for Marxist Scientific Methodology and Modern Scientific and Technological Development, the Research Institute for China’s Modern and Contemporary National Conditions, the Research Institute for Political and Legal Education, and the Research Institute for Engineering Moral Education and Applied Ethics. In the past five years, significant results have been achieved in the education and teaching of ideological and political courses and the discipline construction of Marxist theory, which won the special prize and the first prize of Shanghai teaching achievement successively. Five teaching and research teams have been built, including the Model School of Marxism and the outstanding teaching team of the Ministry of Education, Shanghai leading talent innovation team, Shanghai first-class undergraduate course teaching team, and Shanghai municipal key college course teaching team, and more than 70 scientific research projects have been hosted, including 12 state-level projects and 27 provincial and ministerial-level projects, with the scientific research funds of than 10 million yuan. More than 300 academic papers have been issued on CSSCI and core publications of Peking University, and over 30 works have been published.
